For couples who prefer the city skyline over mountains and beaches, a rooftop parkade offers a distinctly modern, cinematic aesthetic. The top level of the Seymour Street Parkade in downtown Vancouver provides some of the best urban views in the city, making it the perfect backdrop for a fashion-forward engagement session.

While Vancouver is famous for its nature, the downtown core offers incredible opportunities for urban photography. Rooftop locations like this one rely on minimalism, leading lines, and concrete textures to make the subject pop. The resulting images feel more editorial and less traditional, which is perfect for couples who want their engagement photos to look like a spread in a fashion magazine rather than a standard portrait session.
Seymour Street Parkade: The Details
Located at 600 Seymour Street, this specific rooftop is legendary among local photographers. It offers a unique vantage point that captures the density of the city, with the Harbour Centre and surrounding high-rises creating a canyon-like effect. The neutral grey of the concrete acts as a natural reflector, while the open sky allows for beautiful, clean light.
Important Note on Permits and Cost
For years, this location was a bit of a hidden gem that photographers could access for the price of parking. However, due to its popularity, the management company has implemented a formal photography policy.
As of recently, there is now a requirement to pay a $100 fee to conduct a photoshoot on the rooftop. While this adds a cost to the session, it is actually a positive development. It ensures we have permission to be there without the risk of being asked to leave by security, guaranteeing a stress-free experience.
Best Time to Shoot
To get the most out of a rooftop session, timing is everything. We ideally want to start about 90 minutes before sunset. This gives us the “golden hour” light reflecting off the glass skyscrapers, followed by “blue hour” immediately after the sun goes down. Blue hour is when the city lights start to turn on, but there is still ambient light in the sky, creating that moody, cinematic city vibe.
If you are looking for a Vancouver engagement photographer who knows how to navigate the city’s best urban locations, I would love to help you plan your session.
