VanDusen Botanical Garden is one of Vancouver’s most popular public spaces, so it’s natural for couples to worry about crowds — especially during peak spring and summer weekends. The good news is that even on the busiest days, it’s surprisingly easy to find quiet corners that feel private and calm.
Knowing where to go — and when — makes all the difference.

Alma Garden — A Quiet Escape at the Back of the Property
Alma Garden remains one of the most consistently peaceful areas in VanDusen. Located toward the back of the gardens, it’s slightly removed from the main visitor flow, which makes it ideal for couples who want portraits that feel relaxed and uninterrupted.
The layered greenery and natural textures create a soft backdrop that works beautifully for both candid moments and more editorial-style portraits.

Cypress Pond — Calm Water and Natural Framing
Cypress Pond offers a completely different mood. With reflections on the water and surrounding trees providing natural framing, it creates images that feel tranquil and timeless.
Because many visitors gravitate toward the more central areas of the garden, Cypress Pond often feels quieter than expected — especially if you time portraits just before or after peak visitor hours.

The Rhododendron Walk (Between Main Pathways)
One of the quieter areas I often bring couples through is the rhododendron walk tucked slightly off the main pathways. It’s not a single obvious “destination” like Meadow Pond or Cypress Pond — which is exactly why it works so well. Most visitors pass nearby without stopping, leaving pockets of filtered light and layered greenery that feel unexpectedly private.
What I love about this area is how the foliage creates natural depth. Even on busy days, a small shift in angle makes it look like you’re completely alone in the garden. In spring, the blooms add colour and softness; in summer, the canopy provides beautiful open shade that’s incredibly flattering in portraits.

Why VanDusen Rarely Feels Overcrowded in Photos
One of the advantages of VanDusen’s layout is how spread out the property is. Even when attendance is high, it’s easy to shift angles, use depth, or step into nearby pathways that create a sense of privacy within seconds.
Working with a photographer familiar with the garden means knowing how to navigate the space naturally — without needing to rush or compete for locations.
