There is a distinct charm to a garden party wedding that feels effortlessly timeless. It invokes images of long afternoons, soft sunlight, and an atmosphere that is both elegant and relaxed. In Vancouver, there is no venue that captures this aesthetic quite like VanDusen Botanical Garden.
Located in the heart of the city, this 55-acre oasis offers a sense of escape that rivals venues deep in the countryside. This past weekend, I documented a celebration here that didn’t just embrace the garden setting—it enhanced it. By leaning into a floral-forward design concept and a unique layout, the couple created a visual experience that was the definition of organic luxury. This post explores that beautiful day and provides essential insights for any couple considering VanDusen Gardens for their own wedding.
The term garden party is often used, but executing it well requires a balance of nature and design. For this wedding, the goal was to create a sense of intimacy within the vastness of the grounds.
The design philosophy was centered on immersion. Rather than a traditional aisle and altar setup, the couple opted for a configuration that brought guests into the experience. The florals played a crucial role here, designed not as a backdrop, but as a central feature. Lush arrangements of garden roses, delphiniums, and wild greenery were planted directly into the grass, creating a vibrant, living ring. It felt sophisticated yet unpretentious, perfectly suiting the VanDusen atmosphere.
VanDusen offers several ceremony locations, but for this specific vision, the Great Lawn was the only choice. Its expansive, manicured grass provided the perfect canvas for a circular seating arrangement.
Guests were seated in a full 360-degree circle, facing inward toward the center. In the middle of this ring stood the couple, completely surrounded by a ground-level nest of wildflowers and blooms. This layout changes the entire energy of a ceremony. Instead of an audience watching a performance from rows away, the couple was literally enveloped by their community.
From a photography perspective, this setup is incredible. It allows for angles that capture the couple’s expressions with the faces of their parents and best friends soft-focused in the background. The mature trees bordering the Great Lawn provided open shade, filtering the sunlight and creating a soft, even glow that rendered the vibrant floral colors perfectly.
Following the ceremony, the reception moved toward the Visitor Centre. This architectural marvel, with its roof designed to resemble an orchid petal, is one of the most unique wedding spaces in British Columbia.
This is where the garden party vibe transitioned into an evening of refined elegance. The seamless flow between the outdoor terrace and the indoor hall allows guests to enjoy the sunset while sipping cocktails. For a floral-forward wedding, this space is a blank canvas. The high ceilings and neutral tones of the wood and concrete allow colorful centerpieces to pop.
The couple continued the theme of abundance here, with tablescapes featuring cascading blooms and taper candles. As the natural light faded and the venue’s ambient lighting took over, the glass walls of the centre reflected the candle flames, creating a warm, magical atmosphere that felt intimate despite the grandeur of the space.
From a photography perspective, VanDusen is arguably the most diverse venue in the city. You don’t need to travel off-site for portraits because the variety of backdrops within the gates is endless.
Depending on the season, we can utilize the famous Laburnum Walk with its golden hanging chains of flowers, the serenity of the Japanese Garden, or the structured elegance of the Elizabethan Hedge Maze. For this wedding, we focused on the wildest parts of the garden to match the floral theme. We found pockets of tall grasses and blooming rhododendrons that framed the couple in texture and color.
The key to great portraits here is timing. We scheduled a short session during the golden hour—the hour before sunset—when the light slants low across the lawns. This adds a cinematic quality to the images, highlighting the textures of the dress and the surrounding petals.
For couples planning a Vancouver wedding, VanDusen strikes a rare balance. It offers the beauty of a destination outdoor wedding with the convenience of a city location. It is easily accessible for guests, has ample parking, and offers world-class infrastructure for catering and event management.
But beyond the logistics, it is a venue with a soul. It changes with the seasons, ensuring that no two weddings look exactly alike. Whether you are planning a spring celebration surrounded by cherry blossoms or a summer event defined by lush greenery, the garden provides a living, breathing backdrop that elevates the entire experience.
If you are inspired by this floral-forward garden party, here are a few things to keep in mind for your own planning:
- Consider the Circle: If you are getting married on the Great Lawn, break tradition. A circular layout creates incredible intimacy and ensures every guest has a front-row view.
- Footwear Matters: A true garden party takes place on grass. Advise your guests (and choose for yourself) footwear that can handle soft ground, or provide heel stoppers for a thoughtful touch.
- Lean into Color: Green is the dominant color of the venue. Don’t be afraid to use bright, vibrant florals—corals, pinks, purples—to stand out against the verdant background.
