There are wedding venues that feel like event spaces, and then there are venues that feel like film sets. Swaneset Bay Resort & Country Club falls firmly into the latter category. With its towering flags, manicured grounds, and castle-like façade, it creates an immediate sense of arrival that few locations in British Columbia can match.

For the couple envisioning a celebration defined by grandeur and timeless elegance, Swaneset is often the only choice. This past weekend, I documented a black tie wedding here that perfectly illustrated why this venue remains the crown jewel of Fraser Valley luxury. It was a day characterized by classic choices: white florals, candlelight, and a level of sophistication that will look just as stylish fifty years from now.

The Grand Arrival

The experience of a Swaneset wedding begins the moment guests turn onto the property. The long, winding driveway through the valley sets the tone, building anticipation before the clubhouse even comes into view.

The architecture of Swaneset is unique in the Vancouver area. It offers a sense of scale that is commanding. The stone exterior and massive windows create a backdrop that requires formal attire. Seeing guests arrive in tuxedos and floor-length gowns felt entirely appropriate against the backdrop of the venue. It is a space that demands you dress up for the occasion, elevating the entire atmosphere of the event.

A Ceremony Framed by Mountains

While the building is impressive, the natural setting is equally spectacular. The ceremony took place on the main lawn, where the manicured perfection of the golf course gives way to the rugged coastal mountains.

For this wedding, the design remained restrained to let the view speak for itself. A clean, classic aisle led to an altar adorned with masses of white roses and orchids. The choice of an all-white floral palette is the ultimate timeless move. Against the deep greens of the fir trees and the grey of the mountains, the white blooms popped, creating a crisp, clean aesthetic that felt incredibly high-end.

The Reception: Light and Glass

The reception was held in the Grand Ballroom, a space famous for its floor-to-ceiling windows. This is the venue’s defining feature. As the sun sets, the room is flooded with golden light, and guests are treated to a panoramic view of the valley without ever leaving their seats.

The couple chose to anchor the room with a dramatic long head table, seating themselves alongside their entire wedding party. This layout is a fantastic choice for Swaneset because it fills the length of the room and draws the eye toward the view.

The table design was a masterclass in monochrome luxury. Hundreds of candles ran the entire length of the table, interspersed with low, lush arrangements of orchids and roses. As the natural light faded and the room darkened, the candlelight reflected off the massive glass windows, creating an infinite glow that wrapped around the room. It was intimate, romantic, and undeniably cinematic.

Portrait Potential

From a photographer’s perspective, Swaneset offers a diverse range of looks within a short walk. The main gates are iconic, offering a structured, architectural look that suits editorial-style posing.

However, the real magic happens at sunset. We took advantage of the venue’s location in the valley to capture the final moments of sunlight. The long pathways and open fairways allow for sweeping, wide-angle shots that capture the grandeur of the landscape. For a black tie wedding, this contrast is striking—the sharpness of the tuxedo and the elegance of the bridal gown set against the soft, organic lines of the hills.

Why Choose Swaneset for a Black Tie Wedding?

If you are considering Swaneset for your own wedding, it is important to understand what the venue offers beyond just a beautiful building. It offers a canvas for grandeur.

The high ceilings and vast spaces can handle elaborate decor. You can fill the room with tall centerpieces, hanging installations, or, as this couple did, an ocean of candlelight, and the room will never feel cluttered. It was designed for big, bold statements.

Furthermore, the isolation of the venue plays a key role. Because it is removed from the city, there is no noise pollution, no traffic, and no distractions. It feels like a private estate, allowing your guests to be fully immersed in the experience you have created for them.

Planning Your Timeless Design

This wedding was a perfect example of how sticking to the classics yields the best results at a venue like this. By committing to a strict palette of black, white, and gold, the couple created a cohesive look that complemented the venue rather than competing with it.

If you are planning a wedding at Swaneset, my advice is to embrace the formality. Encourage black tie attire. Use the height of the ballroom to your advantage. And prioritize the sunset hour, as it provides the most flattering light of the day at this specific location.
